Bydee grows global sales by 189% with international selling tools on the Shopify Plus plan

Bydee is a Sydney-based swimwear, resort wear, and jewellery brand born out of a love of detail and design at founder and CEO Dessy Hairis’s family kitchen bench while in her teens. Established in 2013, the retailer has evolved from a market stall seller to an internationally recognized brand, capturing customers all over the world with their vibrant and luxurious designs.

With a goal to grow overseas and bring greater engagement to audiences everywhere, Bydee knew they needed greater customization capabilities to make their online store presence more relevant and appropriate for consumers in different markets. Using Shopify’s extensive customization tools, Bydee created better customer experiences, boosting customer numbers and sales at home and abroad.

Since upgrading to the Shopify Plus plan, Bydee has seen:

  • 189% increase in sales revenue globally over two years
  • 131% growth in customers globally over two years
  • 26% increase in AOV over two years

The challenge: Creating experiences to bring consumers greater delight

Starting out selling in markets, Bydee shifted to a predominantly online model as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.Business boomed, with consumers who were no longer able to easily visit retail stores in person turning to online shopping to find and purchase items they were looking for. Fortunately, Bydee had switched to Shopify in 2018, meaning they were well placed to deal with the online influx.

As the brand has expanded, they’ve found a growing customer base of loyal fans in other international markets, particularly the United States, along with the United Kingdom and New Zealand. With rapid customer growth at home and overseas, Bydee wanted to provide an enhanced customer experience, tailored to suit consumers from different regions and with different tastes.

To drive customer loyalty and power sales through greater personalization, Bydee wanted to create a more streamlined online checkout experience with automated offers and discounts to provide greater delight for customers while curbing manual back-end processes. They also wanted to provide a more dedicated experience for US customers to drive further growth in the strategically important market.

We have a big portion of our business in the US, and being able to provide a customized, localized experience in that market is incredibly important for our growth. Shopify’s Plus plan gave us the opportunity to make that happen.

The solution: An online store tailored to every customer in every country

With an online business already powered by Shopify’s Basic plan, Bydee upgraded to Shopify’s Plus plan in 2021, bringing a range of additional products, tools, and capabilities. These gave the retailer the ability to realize their growth goals through an enhanced customer experience, greater personalization, and a dedicated international expansion channel.

Shopify’s Plus plan gave Bydee the ability to employ Shopify Checkout Blocks to customize their checkout page with features such as custom order and shipping discounts. In combination with the Shopify Flow automation tool, Bydee was able to easily provide product discounting and free gift promotions seamlessly, delivering greater personalization with fewer manual processes.

For example, if Bydee wants to offer a free tote bag for orders over $350, the gift item can be automatically discounted once the customer's cart reaches the checkout page. It was difficult to do this in such an automated, streamlined fashion previously. The checkout customization capability also means that Bydee can now offer tiered loyalty discounts to individual customers automatically, while using the Yotpo app to display loyalty points during the checkout process.

Shopify Flow empowers real-time inventory updates, helping to automate the process of sending out-of-stock alerts to the ecommerce team. This makes it easier for us to ensure that an unavailable product is updated on the site immediately, and not sold to a customer by mistake, ultimately creating a better customer experience.

To power their international growth efforts, Bydee used Shopify expansion stores to create an online store dedicated to the US and international market, with their main store aimed at targeting Australian and New Zealand customers. Using Shopify Markets and its automatic currency, language and delivery options, Bydee was able to bring region-specific customization to consumers in the US and other countries for a more personalized experience, such as region-specific delivery fees.

Bydee has subsequently made their expansion store a dedicated US site for even greater country customization and customer engagement. The ability for Bydee to conduct A/B testing across both their main site and their dedicated US site has also enabled the retailer to gain greater visibility into the difference in customer behaviour between multiple markets. For instance, a sticky Add to Cart feature saw strong results in the US market, but not in Australia.

The results: Sales and customer numbers bloom with greater personalization

With the ability to create more highly customized and tailored customer experiences thanks to the tools and features in Shopify’s Plus plan, Bydee has been able to drive more sales, capture more customers and improve average order value by 26% over the past two years. As a result, the brand has witnessed substantial growth across the board, both globally and in strategic markets such as the US.

For instance, Bydee has seen their global sales revenue increase by over 189% throughout a two-year period. Their sales revenue in the US specifically exploded by more than 500% over the same two-year period. Customer numbers have also grown by over 351% in the US alone over the past two years. These results are testament to the customization the brand has accomplished on their US site to make it appeal more to individual customers in that market.

Thanks to the automation and process streamlining capabilities within Shopify, Bydee has also bolstered their back-end processes while delivering a smoother experience for customers on the front-end. Functions such as automated loyalty rewards, gifts and discounts have helped to make Bydee’s customers feel more special while delivering greater sales performance.

Shopify’s Plus plan has significantly expanded our capabilities. It has allowed us to run a broader range of front-end campaigns for our customers, such as free gift-with-purchase promotions and in-cart upsells. We’ve also been able to tailor shipping options based on loyalty program tiers, creating a more personalized and rewarding shopping experience.
